No, the terpenes are from other botanical sources.

Terpenes are not exclusive to any one plant medicine, and in fact, are common to all plants. The terpenes found in plant medicines are also found in many other common botanicals, and our bodies do not differentiate a particular terpene (e.g., D -limonene) from some plant medicines versus the same chemical structure extracted from another plant.

While other oils and CB2™ will often result in very similar effects, the way they work is different. Our Cannanda CB2™ terpene blend is formulated to directly activate CB2 receptors, which are one of the main receptors of our bodies’ endocannabinoid system. Plant medicine oils, on the other hand, have a very low affinity for CB2 receptors, so direct activation of CB2 receptors does not happen. Instead, they can help our endocannabinoid system in indirect ways, including:

• “Allosteric modification” of cannabinoid receptors. These receptors can take on various configurations, and can be found in “inactive” forms, other oils “prime” them, making them easier to activate. 

• Other oils are a competitive inhibitor of FABPs (fatty acid binding proteins), which are the proteins that bind our endocannabinoids for removal out of the body. They binds to FABPs preventing them from shuttling our endocannabinoids out of the body. 
• Other oils also activates the 5-HT receptors (similar to serotonin) and D2 receptors (like dopamine does) along with a number of other potential receptors (either as an activator or inhibitor) …but again, not so much a direct activation on either CB1 or CB2 receptors.

The unique blend of terpenes in CB2™ works through activation of your body’s CB2 receptors. How much of a benefit you feel will depend on a number of factors related to your physiology. First, your body has to produce enough CB2 receptors in the area you are looking for relief. For example, if you sprained your ankle, your body would normally up-regulate the expression of CB2 receptors around your ankle, so that when you use these terpenes, you’ll find relief. If your body doesn’t adequately up-regulate CB2 receptors, there will not be enough receptors to activate so you won’t feel the benefits of the terpenes as much. BUT pay attention to other areas of your body… you might find that other aspects of your health are improved (those areas where CB2 receptors are present in sufficient quantities). 

Second, the CB2 receptors’ conformation must be in the “open” configuration. This allows the terpenes to activate CB2 receptors and transmit a signal into the cell. If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you might have seen the term “CB2 agonist” many times, especially with respect to the CB2 studies we share. 

The simple explanation is: An agonist is a chemical that binds to a receptor and activates the receptor to produce a biological response. (By contrast, an “antagonist” blocks the action of the agonist, while an “inverse agonist” binds to the receptor but causes an action opposite to that of the agonist.) 

Hence “CB2 agonists” are chemicals (whether natural like our Cannanda CB2™ products, or synthetic compounds like some pharmaceuticals) that bind to CB2 receptors and activates them to bring about a biological response. 

Taking it one step further, a “selective” CB2 agonist is one that binds to only the CB2 receptor, but not other receptors. 

This is where Cannanda CB2™ products (which are “selective” for just CB2 receptors) differ from something like synthetic compounds (which also bind CB1 receptors), and why our products bring about nearly all the same health benefits as other plant medicines, but without the intoxication associated with CB1 activation.

Considered an omega-3 fatty acid, SDA is an alternative non-fish, vegetarian source of omega-3s. When most think of vegetarian sources of omega-3s, ALA is what comes to mind. While ALA-rich foods often are recommended as an additional or alternative source of omega-3s for those who don’t (or can’t) consume fish, the conversion of ALA to longer long- chain fatty acids like EPA and DHA is inefficient. The benefit of SDA is that it doesn’t require this enzyme to convert to EPA and DHA, so it’s conversion is far more efficient, making SDA an important fatty acid for everyone, but especially vegetarians.
